Well it's that time again and I have selected a new Charitable Item of the Month on Etsy. This month the item is this original watercolor painting. 100% of the sale will be donated to the American Red Cross. As you know the Red Cross does a great deal of different things from blood donation, recovery after a natural disaster, to helping military families. When you donate to the American Red Cross you know that your money will go where it is most needed at that moment.

My charitable item for last month sold and I was able to make a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I was so happy to do it and to be able to give something back. I hope this one sells too!

Sphinx - Custom Pet Portrait

I've been working on this pet portrait for the past few days and it's finally complete. I have to say that I'm very pleased with the way that it turned out. I was a bit more loose with the cat than I would normally be. I applied the pastel to the face and then blended it. I really liked the effect that I achieved in doing that. I think the cat looks more soft than other portraits that I've done.

"Sphinx" is a surprise birthday gift and I hope the recipient is pleased. :)

Bed Size Rag Quilts

I just completed my first queen size rag quilt. It's quite a jump going from little baby quilts to this big queen. It took me over 13 hours to assemble!

I have created a custom listing on Etsy for a queen size rag quilt and I will be creating listings for twin and king size as well (once I make some samples).

This particular quilt was made with fabric from the Fiona's Fancy line from Riley Blake. It's also backed with natural muslin.

I have all kinds of embroidery/quilt projects in the works too.

Sale Item of The Week on Etsy

This week's sale item in my Etsy shop is this beautiful quilt set (includes twin/throw size quilt, throw pillow and two shams) for $265 (marked down from $295). I cannot take credit for these beautiful pieces as my friend Cathy Lee made them. She owns a quilt shop in town and has asked me to help her sell some of her shop samples.

This set is made from Moda's Origins line. I think the colors are so fun and it would look great draped over a couch, chair or bed.

Good news, my charitable item of the month sold yesterday!! I'm so happy to be making that donation to St. Jude's tomorrow. Thank you to Sarah who purchased that item!

Berenstain Bears Quilt

Remember the Berenstain Bears? I used to love the books when I was a kid. Moda just released their Berenstain Bears themed fabric line and it's called "Welcome To Bear Country." I couldn't resist creating a little rag quilt with the fabric. It's absolutely adorable!

I've been quilting away this week and I'm currently working on a queen size rag quilt. It will be a sample for a custom listing on Etsy. I will be working on more rag quilts and some fun embroidery items too!

Custom Memory Rag Quilt With Photos

I've been working hard on this custom rag quilt with photos and it's finally finished. I made one using my own photos and I think it turned out really well!

I have created a listing on Etsy for a custom quilt with photos, and I think it would make such a wonderful gift! I think it would be great for students going off to college, moms, grandparents, and pet lovers. I also think they would be a neat way to remember a special occasion such as a wedding, birthday or vacation.

Creating a quilt like this is a very lengthy process but the end result is worth it. This quilt is just an absolute treasure. :)

First Long Arm Customer

Yesterday I worked on some quilt tops for my first long arm customer! It was a lot of fun and a learning experience as well! Note to self: never try to do 3 quilts in one day, it's a killer on the back! :)

I started offering long arm quilting services on Etsy a couple weeks ago, but as it turns out I'm not allowed to offer such services on Etsy. Their policies state that services can only be provided if the end product results in a new tangible item and even though quilting meets these requirments, it's still not allowed, at least for now. I was really disappointed by this because there was so much interest in my quilting. So hopefully they can change their policy at some point or business will come from somewhere else.

Today I will continue working on these quilts as the customer has asked me to sew binding for her as well.

Charitable Item Of The Month

This adorable baby rag quilt is my charitable item-of-the-month for February. 100% of this sale will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This offer is good until February 29th at which point I will select a new item and a new charity.

This cute little quilt is made using fabric from the Fox Trails line by Riley Blake. It measures about 23 by 30 and is backed with a soft yellow cotton flannel. And it's also very reasonably priced at $45. :)

In an effort to give back I will now be offering a "charitable item-of-the-month." I will choose one item from my shop (most likely an original painting or quilt) each month and offer to donate 100% of the sale to a selected charity.

Some of the charities that I have selected are: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, American Red Cross, Wounded Warrior Project, Feeding American, ASPCA, UNICEF, Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society.

I have been trying to figure out how I can make a difference with my art and this is what I have come up with. I think the reason we're here is to not only help ourselves but others as well. We can all be a blessing to someone else, in some way.

Tomorrow I will choose my item for the month of February.

I was working on this custom pet portrait today. It was a lot of fun to do, especially that little kitty in the background. The photo given to me for reference was not ideal and I had a little trouble working out the lighting. Unfortunately it was the only photo of Bear that the customer had. I tried to make it work and I'm quite happy with the way it turned out.

I just love these pet portraits. I might try some wildlife in watercolor this week. :)

Looking Back

Taking a look back today at some of my first pastel paintings. It's hard to believe that only 2 years have gone by since I began painting in pastel. I was quite intimidated by the medium when I first began but I'm pretty comfortable with it now.

It's kind of fun to look back and see how far you've come. I haven't been working on my painting skills nearly as much as I'd like, because the sewing part of my business has been growing. But growing as an artist is still very important to me. I tend to be very hard on myself, but I can honestly say that I'm happy with my growth so far.

I can't wait to see where I'm at in 10 years! :)

I title these "baby quilts" but they're perfectly large enough to be cuddle quilts, or throw quilts for older children. I have plans to make some rag quilts for adults as well.

If you're thinking that this scene looks familiar, you would be correct. I painted it about 3 years ago in watercolor. In fact it was one of the first watercolor paintings I ever did, and it now hangs in my kitchen. Well, I had been wanting to try the scene in pastel so I finally did. It was great fun to do, and a lot more work in pastel, that's for sure. But the color pay off was worth it.

Scanning this painting certainly did not do it justice. The painting is so much prettier in person. I'm quite happy with it and it's available for purchase on Etsy.

Long Arm Quilting Services

I am now offering professional long arm quilting services! Quilting will be done on my new Tin Lizzie 18 long arm machine.

Pricing:

The cost for edge-to-edge free motion meandering is $.01 per square inch.

To figure out the cost, multiply the width x length (of your quilt top) x $.01 = Total

Example: 70" x 90" = 6300" x $.01 = $63.00 (plus shipping)

This cost is based upon you providing the backing fabric and batting. If needed batting and backing fabric can be provided at an additional charge (I use Warm & Natural 100% cotton batting).

*Please note there is a $35.00 minimum (per quilt)

Design:

You can choose between a big stippling meander (as shown in the 1st photo below) or an all over loopy meander (as shown in the 2nd photo below). This is all done free motion.

You can let me know what color thread you would like or you can leave it up to me. I generally use neutral thread colors.

Other Services:

Binding services can be provided upon request.

Hand sewn binding - $.25 per linear inch (this includes assembling binding, machine sewing on top and hand sewing on bottom). You provide the fabric.

I can also attach binding with mitered corners to your quilt by machine so your quilt is ready for you to finish by hand. The cost for this is $.10 per linear inch.

Tips:

*Please make sure that your backing fabric and batting (if not provided by me) are at least 4" larger than the quilt top, on all sides.

*Please make sure to trim up or square your quilt top and backing.

*Make sure all seams are secure and all excess threads are removed.

This week is painting week, so I've chosen a pastel painting as my item-of-the-week on Etsy. It's on sale for $45 and will ship for free! I have to say that I just love this little painting. I've even entertained the thought of keeping it for myself, but I don't have a place for it at the moment. I think it would look adorable in a kitchen or bathroom.

In My Sewing Room This Week

One of my goals for the new year was to find a better balance for my art and quilting. Therefore, I've decided to alternate weeks, and I spent this week in my sewing room. I started the week out by making a custom rag quilt for an Etsy customer. Then I made two baby quilt tops and got those onto the long arm machine (which you can see in the photo above). I still have to hand sew the binding on those. Today I think I will work on another rag quilt. I'm enjoying the slightly larger ones, and I think others would as well. They're a great deal of work, but worth it!

My item-of-the-week is an item that I offer at a reduced price and it includes free shipping. For this quilt, it's an $18 savings! The reduced price is $85 (regularly $95). And after doing some research on Etsy, very similar quilts sell for nearly $200 or more! I believe in pricing my work (artwork included) reasonably.

In an effort to get my groove back I've been working on this painting the past couple days. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. I was however, disappointed with the way that it scanned. This particular piece looks so much better in person. The overall softness has not been captured in this photo.

This painting is 5 by 7, and the painting surface is Ampersand Pastelbord. I used all pastel pencils for this piece.

I'm thinking about a landscape for my next painting.

It's that time of year again - time to start thinking about setting goals for the new year. I recently found my list of art goals that I'd set for 2011. There are many that I didn't meet (such as the number of paintings that I wanted to accomplish) and some that I did (such as my financial goals related to my art). Even though I didn't meet many of my goals, I still believe in setting them. Goals give you something to strive for and even if you don't achieve them, you're still moving forward.

For this year I'm not going to set a goal for a certain number of paintings that I want to do. Instead, I've made a resolution to find a better balance for my art and quilting. I think I've come up with something that will work. Instead of trying to paint one day and quilt the next, I'm going to alternate weeks. One week I'll paint, and the next I'll quilt. It should work rather well.

I'd love to hear your art related goals for the new year!

My First Art Show!

I booked my first show yesterday! It will take place in the River Room of the Stillwater Art Guild Gallery in Stillwater Minnesota. I will be doing it along with one of the owners, Randy. I had originally thought about doing it myself but the space is pretty large and I wasn't sure I would be able to fill it. Perhaps next year I could take on a solo show! So anyway the show will take place for the month of December, this year. I have lots of time to prepare, but a lot of work to do!

One of my goals for this year is to do more things like this. I'm relatively shy and don't like talking about myself a whole lot, but I know in order for my business to grow I have to step out of my comfort zone a bit. This is the first step!

I took a bunch of new work to the gallery yesterday and brought some back as well. One of the pieces I brought back is "Cosmos," shown above. Check out my Etsy shop for some more new stuff!

I took a little break from quilting to paint yesterday. I finished up this little painting today. My final painting of 2011! I've never painted a pug before and it was fun. He's just so cute. It's also been about a month or so since I last painted and I felt very rusty. One of my goals for the new year is to better balance quilting and painting. Improving my painting skills is very important to me and I need to make it a bigger priority.

This painting will be available at the Stillwater Art Guild Gallery this next week.

New Quilt

I just listed my first big quilt on Etsy! I made this top using fabric from the Neptune fabric line by Moda, many months ago. I knew I would be unable to quilt it on my sewing machine, so naturally it was the first quilt I quilted on my new machine. This quilt is a very generous size measuring 41" by 71".

I finished up my school work yesterday and now I have a 2 week break (which isn't nearly long enough!). So, I'm looking forward to getting a lot of quilting done and hopefully some painting too. I made 3 table runners yesterday which make up a set that I will be listing on Etsy probably tomorrow or the next day. Today I spent the day making a baby quilt. I tried a completely different pattern and it was rather time consuming, but I really like it. I'm going to attach it to my long arm machine tomorrow and get it quilted.

My Art In The Smurfs

If you've been following my blog for a while you know that some of my hand painted cigar boxes were purchased for the set of The Smurfs film. Well the movie just came out on DVD and I was able to get some still shots of the scenes in which you can see my boxes. I circled them in the photos below. :)

200 Sales!

Yesterday I hit my 200th sale on Etsy! I know compared to others that's no big deal, but it is for me. As I've added new and different items to my shop my sales have increased. I'm hoping that they increase a lot more! :)

All Set Up

My long arm machine is all set up and I've been practicing a bit.

It's huge but luckily it fits perfectly in my sun room.

I took this little video yesterday of me quilting my very first quilt. Please excuse the quality, I was holding my iphone with one hand and quilting with the other.

I've been completely bombarded by homework and yesterday I decided to take a break from it and quilt. I have a couple more big projects and final exams due by the end of next week. Until then I don't intend to get any painting or quilting done. But hopefully over my short break I'll get something accomplished.

New Quilting Machine

So, I've been talking recently about a huge investment that I've made in my business... Well, here it is! I've bought a long arm quilting machine. I'm so super excited about getting it but nervous as well. And I say "nervous" because I could have bought a small car for the amount of money I paid for this thing! Yikes!

It's a Tin Lizzie 18, and I purchased the 10 foot wooden frame seen in the picture. It's being delivered tomorrow and it will be going out in my sunroom. It's just the perfect place for it and I'm excited to try it out. The men delivering it are even going to give me a training session so I won't have to worry about figuring that all out on my own.

The purpose of purchasing this machine is first and foremost so I can branch out and quilt larger items. Every table runner and baby blanket I've made has been quilted on my sewing machine. And that works just fine for small projects but makes quilting a larger blanket next to impossible. I also plan to offer quilting services once I become proficient enough. I don't imagine it will take long since I have been quilting on my sewing machine and understand the concept. I plan to offer long arm quilting through my Etsy page and perhaps even through the gallery who represents me (The Stillwater Art Guild Gallery), as I have some quilted items there.

I'm discovering that growth is so scary and exciting at the same time. But I think I'm more excited and optimistic that I can really create something.

On a side note, I recently marked some paintings down on Etsy to $1!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with them, I'm just trying to make room for new work.

Exciting Business News!

So I have some very exciting news.. I have been trying to figure out some ways in which I can expand my business and I've decided to start selling fabric on my Etsy page. Etsy not only allows us to sell handmade items, but supplies as well. I will be selling mostly pre-cut fabric from Moda and Riley Blake.This is a jelly roll (40 strips, 2 1/2 inches wide) from the Little Apples line by Moda.

This is a charm pack from the Meadow Friends line by Moda. It contains 42 5" squares.

I'm very excited about this because I've been using this fabric for years and I know how great it is. It's also fun just thinking about expanding. Some fabric just arrived this afternoon and I will get it listed on Etsy soon.

I have another addition to my business in the works that is even bigger than this! A whole lot bigger!!! I'm thrilled about it, but terrified at the same time. More details to come!

Hi all, hope you had a great weekend! I just thought I'd share some of my latest quilting projects with you. I've been trying to branch out a bit and do something different.

This is a super cute stack of quilted coasters!
More coasters from the "Figgy Pudding" fabric line, one of my favorites for the holidays.

This is a quilted candle mat made of prairie points. It's so unique and different- there is nothing else like this on Etsy. It's nice because you can keep the points lifted up, like the in photo, or you can keep them down.

Rag Quilted Table Runners

I just listed a bunch of new rag quilted table runners to my Etsy shop. Rag quilts are the latest trend in quilting. Unlike traditional quilting, with a rag quilt the wrong sides are sewn together, leaving the ends exposed. Those ends are snipped and the runner is laundered. What you're left with is soft frayed ends. They're really cute and people just love them. Here are a few that I listed:

I was so happy to paint this custom painting for one of my collectors. She has three other of my watercolor tulip paintings and wanted another, in a different color, to add to her collection. I'm very pleased with the way this painting turned out and I think she will be too.

So I've been experimenting with this new website. It's called CraftLaunch and it's cool because it syncs to your Etsy page. Originally I thought that you didn't need an Etsy account to purchase an item, but you still do. I did think it was convenient though because you don't have to keep track of different inventories. Anyway, I created a webpage (they do a 15 day free trial) and I might give it a try for a month to see how it goes. I often wonder how some artist's do it; having a website while selling on Ebay and other sites. It's a lot to keep up with.

I have a little announcement to make - I had my first international sale on Etsy yesterday! Okay, maybe it's not such a big deal, but I was pretty excited about it. This woman was from Canada and turns out shipping costs were not as bad as I had expected. Therefore, I am officially offering shipping to Canada on my quilted table runners and other items.

I've been working on a commissioned watercolor painting and will post that as soon as I'm finished with it.

Continuing with my "Artist's I Admire" series, I recently interviewed artist Roberta (Roby) Baer. I have been an admirer of her work ever since I happened upon it on Etsy. The level of realism that she's able to achieve is incredible. Please read the interview below and take a look at a few of Roby's beautiful paintings.

Can you share a little bit about your art background?

Other than taking a couple high school art classes, I am self-taught. My mother was a recreational painter and my grandmother was more of a professional painter.

Which mediums do you work in and why?

I work in pastels due to my grandmother's influence. While she would paint with oils, she would let us use her pastels and it carried throughout my entire life.

How often do you paint?

I paint from 5-7 days a week depending on what is going on.

What subjects do you most enjoy painting and why?

I most enjoy painting wildlife because of my parents' love of nature. We were always outside and I gravitate towards mammals.

How would you describe your painting style?

My painting style is photorealism.

Can you tell me a little about your painting process?

My painting process starts with Bristol Board 500. I begin with a graphite sketch... The sketch is very accurate and this keeps me on track when I start to add my pastels. I begin with stick pastels smudging that into the tooth of the board. After achieving the desired foundation, I start to lay in hairs or detail with CarbOthello pastel pencils. I choose not to use any fixatives as it darkens the overall appearance and the painting is no longer achivally sound.

Do you set art related goals for yourself?

I have deadlines for everything that I do. I challenge myself by entering juried and national juried shows.

What is your favorite part about being an artist?

My favorite part about being an artist is the interaction I have with fellow artists and other people. I very much enjoy hearing different interpretations of my work.

How has blogging and the internet changed your life as an artist?

The internet is integral part of how I do my research (e.g., making sure my animals are factual and true to their habitat at any time of year). The blog is a place for me to share with people new paintings I have completed and has allowed me to connect with others.

Do you have any advice for artists just starting out?

My advice is to practice your drawing skills if your goal is realism. This is the most important foundation towards being a good artist. Do your homework... learn tones, values and good composition. These are the building blocks to achieving success.

Tis The Season For Quilting

Well I just added my first baby blanket to my Etsy store. This blanket is so cute and soft! I'm tempted to make a larger one for myself. I'm having a lot of fun with these, in fact I started a couple more today.

I'm so happy that quilting weather has finally arrived. My sewing room is on the 2nd floor of my home and in the summer the air conditioning just doesn't cool it off very well. I've been anxiously awaiting this cooler weather so that I can get some quilting projects done. This morning I put in a Harry Potter movie, made some hot chocolate and got started on a new blanket. It was my idea of a perfect morning. :)

I promise not to share every new blanket that I make, but if you like keep your eye on my Etsy store because some super cute blankets are coming!

Baby Blanket

I recently finished up my college classes (and am now on break for a couple weeks) and got right to work on a few quilts I had to make. The first was a holiday table runner (a surprise gift for a friend) and the second was this cute baby blanket. A couple that my husband knows is about to have their first baby and I thought I would make them a blanket. They didn't find out the gender of the baby so I had to make it neutral.

The first quilt I ever made, I made about 2 years ago, and I actually haven't made one since. It's quite difficult to quilt on my sewing machine once the piece gets large, but a friend clued me in on "tying" and I love it. It's great because I used a poly-cotton blend batting and after tying the blanket is so soft. If it was tightly quilted it would be stiff. So anyway, I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and I've decided to make some for Etsy (in fact I've already made another one and which I will be sewing binding on this evening).

So, just another item that I will be adding to my Etsy shop. Look out for them! :)

Today we remember the tragic events that took place on this day 10 years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with those lost and their families today. Whatever problems we think we have should feel so very small today.

I was a senior in high school, in advanced biology class, when the news broke. My teacher turned on the television and we spent the rest of the day just watching the news coverage. I've always felt deeply patriotic, but this really sparked something in me. Had 9-11 not happened, I'm not sure I would have joined the military shortly after graduating. I had a deep yearning to serve and I served a short time in the Air Force.

Thank you to those who continue to serve our country.

Thomas Kinkade Reproduction in Pastel

Thomas Kinkade Reproduction, 9 by 12, Pastel

Been wondering what the "challenging painting" I've been working on was? Well, here it is. I attempted the unthinkable, recreating a Thomas Kinkade in pastel. Thomas Kinkade is one of my very favorite artists. I have his calendar hanging in my kitchen and I kept admiring this particular painting. Then I got the crazy idea to give it a try in pastel. Obviously I wasn't able to do it justice, but I think it turned out fairly decently.

My intentions were to see if a Thomas Kinkade type of style was achievable in pastel. I have to say I think it would be a lot easier in oil, but with some practice and developed techniques I think it just might be possible with pastel.

This piece was so much fun, I just love all that detail. I was disappointed when I went to photograph the painting because the colors appeared so dull. I tried to fix it in photoshop and it helped a bit. The colors are so much prettier in person.

Here is a look at today's watercolor. There was just something so sweet about this white rose against that dark background. I really enjoyed this piece. I'm not quite sure why, but I just love all those fussy little details.

This little watercolor was completed on 140lb watercolor paper and completed with artist's quality winsor and newton paints.

I'm already planning my next pastel painting, but it's so crazy I'm not even going to say what it is just in case it doesn't turn out. :)

I have to begin this post by thanking Sharon at A New England Life for allowing me to use her beautiful photograph as a reference for this painting. Thanks Sharon!

I decided to try a little something different today. I'd been admiring this photo for a long time but was too scared to even try it. For some reason I feel like I cannot paint foliage very well, but I haven't really tried. So, I decided to give it a shot today and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I was disappointed with the scan of the painting because it seemed to take something away from it. I think it looks much better in person and I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

As always, this painting was completed with artist quality pastel pencils on pastelbord. The detail of the lighthouse was so much fun. I think I'm going to have to try more paintings like this.

I've been working the past few days on this pet portrait. A customer requested this painting as a gift for her sister. I was a bit nervous before starting it because the right side of the dog (in the reference photo) was mostly in shadow. It didn't look bad in the photo, I just wasn't sure I was going to be able to render it the way I wanted to with paint. But, I am very pleased with the way that it turned out. The scan isn't perfect, but the original looks great.

Cards and Quilts

I just thought I'd share what I've been working on the past couple days. The table runner above I made today. The fabric is all from the "Grand Finale" line by Moda. And it was my very first attempt at applique. I did some little leaves and acorns. It definitely takes a bit more time to do, but it was fun and it's different. This runner is listed on Etsy for $32.00 if anyone is interested.

These are a few cards that I made yesterday. I use my decorative painting style when painting these cards, much like I use for my cigar boxes. I had several of these listed on Etsy but no one seemed interested, so I took them to the gallery instead. I've sold quite a few, so I thought it would be fun to make some more. I don't know about any of you, but I still like to send cards. We are all so much into technology now that people don't send letters and cards like they used to. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. :)

It's finished! Like I mentioned in my previous post, I felt a bit rusty with this painting considering it has been a couple months since I used my pastels. But it's amazing how quickly it comes back. I also think it's good to take a break once in a while. I've come back from this time off with renewed creativity and fresh ideas.

This painting was completed on pastelbord and I used all CarbOthello pastel pencils. For now this painting is for sale on Etsy, but I might end up taking it to the gallery in a few weeks.

Water Lily - Work In Progress

I'm working on a new pastel painting. The main subject is a water lily, but I haven't settled on a name yet. It's been months since I've painted in pastel and I'll admit, I'm a bit rusty! But after painting for a couple hours I started to settle back into my groove. I'm pleased with the way it's progressing.

So far I've only used pastel pencils and the surface is pastelbord. It's an 8 by 10, which is a bit bigger than I would normally work. I've only had a handful of pieces as big as 8 by 10 and my Grandma just purchased 2 of them. I need to start working a bit bigger, so this is a start.

I hope to have this finished in the next couple of days. :)

No Apologies

I made a decision recently to stop feeling guilty and to stop apologizing for my art. Perhaps you're wondering why I would feel guilty or need to apologize for it. Well, I have gotten grief over the years from people who think that I shouldn't sell different types of items in my Etsy shop (I sell original fine art, prints, quilts, hand painted boxes and other decorative painted items). I've also gotten grief for supposedly not finding my "voice" as an artist yet.

To tell you the truth I'm just tired of it all. I shouldn't have to feel guilty because I have many interests. And I sell some of everything on Etsy, which tells me that people enjoy my different crafts as well as my fine artwork. And regarding my "voice" as an artist, I don't know why I have to paint in one medium and in one particular style. That just doesn't match my personality. I like to experiment. Some subjects I like to do a little looser and others I like to do more realistic. I appreciate the opinion of other artists, but I think it's time that I just follow my own path. Art is subjective and there should not be any rules. Giving into the harsh opinions of others has put a damper in my creativity.

I'm choosing to pursue what I choose and that's that. :)

The Smurfs

I'm so excited! I went to see the Smurfs on Sunday and I spotted some of my boxes! The set decorator purchased the three boxes pictured below. My husband, brother and sister and I all went to see the movie and were scanning the rooms trying to find the boxes.

I think I spotted this one and the one below on some tables. I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD to see where they all were.
This peach roses box was clearly seen in many shots. In the movie, the Smurfs redecorate part of the living room, in the apartment of the main characters and this box is standing up right on the left hand side of the screen on a table. I'll admit that it was very cool seeing something I painted in a movie!

And the movie was cute. If you have kids or enjoy family type movies, you should go see it. :)

I couldn't help but pick up this little Smurf from McDonald's yesterday! :)

My Art In The Smurfs

The Smurfs is coming out next Friday! If you follow my blog you already know that some of my hand painted cigar boxes were purchased for the set of this movie. This was well over a year ago and it's so exciting that the release is almost here! I'm looking forward to seeing the movie and trying to spot my boxes. I actually completed a new painting! It's been 2 months, I can't even believe it. If I hadn't gotten married I would say that going 2 months without painting is unacceptable. :) At least I had a good reason.

Anyway, I'll admit I felt a little rusty with this piece, but I enjoyed it. Getting the shade of those shadows was a challenge. I also used a piece of 140lb watercolor paper that had been stretched on a piece of gatorboard for several weeks and I had some issues with it. I used Winsor & Newton paints on this piece and the size is 5 x 7.

My Wedding

Hi everyone! I'm officially a married lady! And I have to say it feels great even though Chuck and I have been together for over 9 years. It feels wonderful to finally have it be official! And I feel so relieved... school is out for a couple of weeks and the stress of the wedding is over. Ahh.. I feel like I can breathe a little easier.

I've so missed being in my studio these past few weeks. I plan on starting a new painting this week, and I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Taking a Break

I've decided to give myself some permission to take a break from my art. I have been feeling quite overwhelmed lately by everything I've got going on and having a difficult time making time for my painting. I'm taking a full class load and this quarter is easily one of the busiest I've had in my 4 years in college. I'm also getting married in 4 weeks so I'm feeling some stress from that. Actually this school quarter ends the day before my wedding. I'm even thinking about beginning my yoga teacher training soon. So you can see why I'm feeling overwhelmed. It takes a great deal for me to get stressed and my yoga practice has helped me manage it, but it's still a lot.

My art is unfortunately my last priority right now and after the wedding and after this quarter is over I plan on jumping right back into it. And I may do some painting over the next few weeks but only if I have the time and I want to.

I just wanted to share some of my latest hand painted items. After high school I took a break from art and when I got back into it I started doing decorative painting. I just loved it. I have continued to paint in that way on my cigar boxes but I recently decided to paint on some other items that I had.

I thought I would try something a little different today. I've never painted a flower like this, without some kind of background. I have to say I really like it. The simple white background adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the painting. And the flower just jumps out. I had a lot of fun mixing colors too.

I completed this little watercolor today. It took me much longer than normal as I wasn't able to use a blow dryer to speed things along. My Fiance has been working nights again this week and I didn't want to risk waking him with the dryer. It was certainly a different way of painting. But I'm happy with the way it turned out.

A new painting! It feels like it's been forever since I last painted. I'm quite pleased with the way this watercolor turned out. I used some new opaque paints and it was challenging, but I love the colors.

I've decided to reserve this painting for the gallery. In honor of Spring I thought it would be nice to bring in some new floral watercolors. And I think it would look beautiful in this gold frame that I have.

Busy Busy

Hi everyone! I wish I had a new painting to share with you today, but I do have one in the works. I started a new watercolor painting yesterday of some beautiful peach roses. I'm sure I will finish that up within the next couple days.

Life has been rather hectic the past week or so. My Fiance has been working a few nights instead of days and that has my schedule all messed up. I've also been busy with new classes in school (I'm taking Intro. to Psychology, Corporate Business Structures and Litigation II this quarter). And I've been thinking a great deal about getting my teaching certificate so I can teach yoga. I can either begin the program this Fall or next Spring. I'd like to start this Fall, but I have a lot to to in order to prepare for it. So, it's been a balance of yoga, school, painting and my other daily responsibilities. On the upside, there is never a time where I don't have something to do and I'm never bored. :)

I couldn't resist painting another cat. I just loved this picture. The scan makes the painting look harsh, but it's much softer in person. It's just a sweet image.

I was in the mood for a watercolor today. I couldn't wait to paint those soft petals. The reference photo I used was from the WetCanvas reference library and the person lived in Tennessee, so that's where I got the title.

This painting was done on 140lb cold press watercolor paper with Winsor & Newton paints. I will have this painting listed on Etsy soon.

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while now may remember that Columbia Pictures purchased some of my art (some of my hand painted cigar boxes) last year for the set of The Smurfs. Well, the trailer is finally out! The movie comes out in August. I have no idea what role exactly my boxes will play so it will be fun to try and spot them! :)

Etsy Sales Will Be Donated To The Red Cross

Effective today, until March 31st I will be donating 100% of my Etsy sales to the American Red Cross in an effort to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I did this last year when that terrible earthquake hit Haiti and ended up having a small amount to donate. In times like this I feel so helpless, but feel like I want to do something, anything to help. This is about the least that I can do. But if you were thinking about donating some money anyway, this is a cool way to do it because you get something in return. Little Dahlia

After about a week and a half without painting I just had to do this little painting today. I have 1 week left of classes and my professors have been piling on the work. This week is going to be the worst with final projects due and exams. But after that I will have a 2 week break.

This mini painting was done on 140lb watercolor paper with Winsor & Newton paints. These mini paintings really have to be seen in person to be appreciated. Scanning or photographing just does not do them justice. For that reason I think I might start selling them in the gallery instead of on Etsy. But I will still share them. They also make great studies for larger paintings.

Interview With Artist Nancy Medina

Continuing with my "Artists I Admire" series, I recently interviewed artist Nancy Medina. I have been an admirer of her work ever since I first set eyes on one of her large flower pot paintings.

Can you share a little bit about your art background?

I began drawing and sketching in the first grade, and I used to get in trouble for doodling in the margins of my homework. I remember drawing the Frito Bandito on a blank page in the back of my first grade reader. I just couldn't let that entire white page go to waste! When I turned 30, I made a new year's resolution to begin painting. I studied art in College, and then took some workshops but mostly I am self taught.

I know you mostly paint in oil but do you ever, or have you ever painted in other mediums?

I began painting in watercolor, mostly large botanical works on heavy 300 lb paper. I was single and poor and living in Santa Barbara so I would trade paintings for furniture.

How would you describe your painting style?

My painting style is impressionistic, with an emphasis on bold color. I like my work to feel as if it is moving, as if the color is vibrating, in the tradition of the old impressionist masters.

Can you tell me a little bit about your painting process?

Now I work mostly in oils, starting with transparent underpaintings and building up to opaque, brighter colors in the final stages.

Your florals are beautiful. Can you tell me why you enjoy painting them so much?

I love painting florals because color makes me happy. Mother nature gives me free material to work from every day. How can anyone look at a rich red geranium and not want to paint it?

Did you set any art goals for this year?

My art goals are lofty, I want to be able to make enough money with my art so that I can quit my full time job and become a full time artist someday. For now, that pesky mortgage is in the way.

How has blogging and the internet changed your life as an artist?

Blogging and the internet has really helped my art career, especially after I was juried into the original Daily Painters group, http://www.dailypainters.com/. Micah Condon and a small group of talented artists created this online gallery, which has thousands of viewers each day.

Do you have any advice for artists just starting out?

For artists getting started, I would encourage them not to get discouraged, but to work hard. Put that energy into your canvas and spend time in the studio. Look to the masters and the great teachers when you feel lost. My art has grown over the past four years, you can see my style has changed drastically if you look back in time on my blog. I still have a long way to go, but I am enjoying the journey.

Another watercolor mini today. I had no idea painting pansies could be so much fun! I've only painted 1 other pansy before, a blue one. I remember enjoying doing the veining and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Something about all those little details that just pull the piece together. Unfortunately the scanner seems to blend colors together and doesn't pick up the subtle details. You have to see these little mini's in person to really appreciate them. :)

Prints and Other News

Well this is what I have been working on today. I'm planning another trip to the gallery tomorrow and I wanted to bring some new prints along. I purchased a swanky new printer a few months ago and I'm actually able to make my own Giclee prints now. The printer is great but it's still a hassle getting the images just right. Although it still beats troubling someone else to do it for me.

I'm afraid that I may not be posting too many new paintings over the next few weeks. I'm nearing the end of my current college classes so I have final projects and exams coming up. I'm also getting married in June so I'm beginning to make plans for that. I don't want to lose momentum with my paintings, but there is only so much time in the day. :)

Here is my first watercolor ACEO for Etsy. All the others I've done were delivered to the gallery this past weekend. Now I'm working on some for my website. I think it's important to have a range of pieces (and different prices) available for people to choose from.

This little paintings are highly collectible and affordable original pieces of art. "Red Rose" was completed on 140lb watercolor paper. This mini painting is listed for $20. I also have acid free white mat boards available for them. They're 8 by 10 with an opening of 2 1/2 by 3 1/2. These fit very easily in an 8 by 10 frame.

The above painting, "An Apple A Day" is an 8 by 10 pastel painting. I had originally painted it for a window piece for the gallery. I delivered some new work yesterday and brought this one home. It's now available in my Etsy shop for purchase. I also relisted "Shell On The Shore," "Summer Pond," and "Summer Cherries."
Here is a photo of two of the little watercolor paintings that I framed and hung in the gallery. I really like the way these look framed like this.

I spent the day at the gallery yesterday and I am feeling very inspired. Now that my hand is healed I'm looking forward to spending more time in the studio painting.

Open Tulip & 200th Post

Ah, it feels so good to be painting again! I was worried that my hand wouldn't heal properly and that I would need surgery. It's not 100% healed, but I am able to write and paint so I am happy. :) And this is my 200th post! Blogging has been a great way for me to share my art with everyone and to receive feedback as well.

I actually started this painting before I hurt my hand and it was difficult to get back to it after almost 2 weeks. I usually like to finish a piece within a day or two so this was a bit of a struggle to get back into, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out. I originally began this painting thinking that it would end up in the gallery. I'm not sure quite yet. Have to see how it will look framed. I used all Winsor and Newton paints on 140lb cold press paper.

Bunny Sketch

My hand is feeling much better and I thought I would try painting today. I did work on a painting that I started before I injured my hand, today. Then this afternoon I decided to do a little sketching. I bought this super cute children's book called "Quiet Bunny's Spring Colors" and the bunny in it is just adorable so I decided to try drawing it. I haven't sat down to draw anything in years. I don't consider the drawings I do for my paintings real "drawings" because it's really just an outline.

I have some confidence in my ability to draw/paint animals in realism for my fine art work, but creating a animal character for a children's book is more difficult for me. This is why I need to draw a lot more and just play around.

I've decided to put together an illustration portfolio, or at least to begin planning it. I will need a good 8 -15 illustrations showcasing what I can do. Because I don't draw all that much, I think I will need to spend quite a bit of time on this. I plan to give myself several months to do this because it's not something that I want to rush and I will continue to work on other projects also.

New Creative Endeavor - Writing

Since I hurt my hand and have not been able to paint, I've been thinking about something that I've always been interested in, writing. I have always been a reader and I used to write stories all the time when I was a kid, just for fun. As I got older I began to write poetry. I tried to dig out some of my old poems and stories but only found a couple. I wanted to share them with you but the poem is about love and is kind of personal, and the story I wrote when I was in elementary school. It's called, "The Haunted House." It was terribly written but it brought back the love I had for story telling.

I actually have to thank the person who told me that my artwork has no emotion because their comment is what got me thinking. I was admiring an illustration done by an artist I really respect and I had an intense emotional response to it. I began thinking how I wished my work could have that kind of impact on others. When I go into the studio in the morning I think, "What will I paint today?" It's more about creating a pretty picture than anything, but I still consider it an emotional outpouring because I love it.

Anyway, I was thinking first about illustration and then I began thinking about writing. I think as creative beings we're always trying to find new ways to express ourselves. I picked up some reference material on illustrating children's books a few years ago because it was an interest of mine but never looked at it. I've let the fear of failure keep me from trying many things. I've decided that I have to at least try it because I will never forgive myself if I don't.

There are so many reasons why I am interested in writing and illustrating children's books. First, I don't think children read enough today with all the video games and other electronic means of entertainment. Secondly, I think children can learn a great deal of life lessons from books. I so enjoyed books as a child and I love the thought of creating something that a child can enjoy and learn from at the same time.

Initially I had decided not to share this idea with anyone, except for close family who I knew would be supportive, but then I thought that I had to share it with everyone else because I'm just so excited about it. I know I probably do enough considering I have quilting, photography, decorative painting and fine art, but I'm not going to hold back because I'm already involved in so many other things. I've let people make me feel bad for having so many interests and I realized that that isn't right. People can be great at many things, I've seen it, and that's what gives me encouragement.

I in no way intend on quitting painting, I just plan to work some writing and illustrating in there too. I will certainly share my work with you as I go along. I have so many ideas and I can hardly wait to get started!

Hand Injury

I just want to let you all know that I injured my hand the other day and I probably won't be putting out a painting for a couple weeks. I won't bother to tell you what happened because it's one of those stupid injuries. The good news is that I didn't break anything, and if everything goes well it will heal on it's own and I will not need surgery. I'm having a very difficult time spending my time on the couch instead of in my studio. I think I'm already experiencing painting withdrawals. :) Anyway, I didn't want you all to think that I fell off the face of the earth. I'll be back soon, I hope!

Be Kind

I usually like to reserve my blog posts for positivity and I don’t usually complain but I feel a need to vent a little today. I have been overwhelmed lately by negative comments on my artwork. I’ve been receiving impolite comments on my painting style, which is realism, as well as people suggesting that I do not put any emotion into my art. I really feel a need to address these comments and to remind people of the old saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Regarding my painting style, I am learning that you cannot choose your style, just like you cannot choose the style of your handwriting. You can force yourself to paint a certain way for a while, but eventually you will fall into something naturally. I never thought that I would be a realistic painter but the more that I paint the more that that’s what I’m leaning toward, and I’m learning to just except it and embrace it. People have suggested to me that realism is “taking the easy way out” and that it’s not an artistic expression at all, it’s simply copying. I say of course it’s an artistic expression. Something that I’ve noticed is that the people who make such comments paint very loosely and I’d like to see them try to paint realistically. It’s not easy and I enjoy the challenge to trying to paint something exactly the way I see it. How can you criticize someone for painting what they see? There are many artists whose work I don’t particularly like, but I still respect them and their passion for what they do.

Regarding my work showing no emotion, I think that has been among the most hurtful comments that I have gotten. I believe that all art is an emotional outpouring. A need to express ourselves and the way we view the world in a creative way. All art is emotional. You may not see how painting a still life of peppers, for example, is an emotional outpouring, but it is. Just because you may not have an emotional reaction to a piece or art doesn’t mean that it didn’t come from an emotional place for the artist. I paint what I love, what brings me joy and what I find unique.

Art is very personal. When you criticize someone’s work, you’re criticizing them. You don’t have to like my work, but really if you don’t have anything kind to say, please don’t say anything at all. Most of you have been so kind and supportive and I thank you very much for that.

Magnolia Blossom

Today's painting is this little magnolia blossom. Those shadows just drew me in. I'm a little disappointed because these mini paintings don't seem to be scanning very well. They look so much better in person. In fact that's something to always keep in mind with art that you see online; it will always look better in person.

Calla Lily

I'm having way too much fun with these little watercolor paintings. The scanner doesn't seem to be doing the best job at obtaining a good image of the painting though. It's so much cuter in person. I can't want to get these framed. I have these white 8 by 10 mat boards with a 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 opening and these little paintings look so nice with them. I've always liked the look of a bigger mat with a small painting.

Anyway, this calla lily was a joy to paint. I have never painted a white flower before, so the shadows made me a bit nervous. However, took out some of my "cobalt's" and mixed just the right colors. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and I will definitely be painting a calla lily in a larger size in the future.

This little painting will be available at the Stillwater Art Guild Gallery in a couple of weeks.

This little mini painting is part of a small series that I'm doing for the gallery. I plan to do 4 or 5 of these along with 4 or 5 larger pieces. I've actually never painted this small before so it was a bit of a challenge, but it was fun! I have some 8 x 10 mat boards cut to 2 1/2 by 3 1/2, so I thought doing some mini's and framing them would be a cute idea. Plus, painting smaller means having to charge less and I think it's important to have a range for people to choose from.

I have so many different projects that I need to start working on. I have these new pieces I need to work on for the gallery, we're having a "For The Birds" event at the gallery next month and I need to paint a few pieces for that, Randy Higbee is having another 6 x 6 inch show and I'd like to submit a few pieces, plus painting challenge pieces for the month. Yikes! I better get busy!

Interview With Artist Paula Ford

Can you share a little bit about your art background?

My first exposure to art was when I was a kid. My mother was an artist. She painted abstracts in oils. She would paint at the kitchen table during the day before my father got home from work. She would enter shows, and win too! She was really good! My brother also liked to draw and he was really good at it. It really didn’t interest me in the least, though I loved to watch while they created.

I remember taking Art History in college and found it to be boring. I was a business major with a very left brain.

It’s funny, when I was about 12, one day I got the urge to draw so I got out a piece of paper and a pencil and was sitting at the other end of the couch from my father, who was taking a nap. I drew his profile and it looked exactly like him!! I was shocked! I never picked up another pencil for 30 years.

Which mediums do you work in and why?

I work mainly in soft pastels and am re-learning oils.

Years ago my husband and I lived in Abilene, TX. For a kid from the northeast (Upstate NY), Texas was quite different. It was really hot and flat and there weren’t many trees. I missed the northeast so bad that one day I decided if I couldn’t find anything beautiful to look at, I was going to learn to paint something beautiful.

Fortunately Kay Walton was teaching at the local Hobby Lobby. She is a famous bluebonnet/landscape artist and is represented by many galleries around the country. I attended her classes for almost 2 years. Then I found Wetcanvas.com. I went to many of the forums and ended up in the pastel forum. I didn’t even know what pastels were. That began my journey with pastels. Again, as luck would have it, Paul Friske, PSA, lived in Abilene (was this all meant to be?? I think so!!) and taught pastels. I studied under him until we moved away from Abilene about 5 years ago.

Pastels are much quicker to use than oils. You don’t have to wait for them to dry and if you make a mistake, brush it off and reapply pastel over the top. Clean up is a breeze too. Just wash your hands and you’re done!

Now that I’m more experienced, I’ve gone back to oils again and am loving the challenge and it’s so much fun to do something different.

How often do you paint?

I paint almost every day. Once in a while if I don’t paint, I’m still puttering in my studio.

How would you describe your painting style?

I would say, besides representational, soft, romantic, and happy.

"Aspen Valley" - Pastel

Can you tell me a little bit about your painting process?

I always start out by doing thumbnail sketches. That shows me if the composition is good and if the painting is going to work. I may take it one step beyond that and do a value sketch to show me where my darkest darks, and lightest lights will go. I believe in being prepared before painting. Can’t remember who said this, but in my head I can hear the words, “An unprepared painting is a failed painting.”

I then make a quick sketch onto my surface, making sure I accurately follow my chosen thumbnail sketch.
Most of the time I work on either Ampersand Pastelbord or Uart and almost always do a wet underpainting by using pastels for the first layer and then washing it in with rubbing alcohol and a ½” flat synthetic brush to set in the colors and unclog the tooth. It’s just a matter of putting in my darks first, then mid tones, and then a few highlights to finish the painting. I work all over the painting all at once, going back and forth, back and forth throughout the painting until it’s done. Layer, layer, layer.

Did you set any art goals for this year?

Not really. I just always try to paint and study as much as possible, exercise every day, eat right, and stay healthy.

How has blogging and the internet changed your life as an artist?

Oh my gosh, I am such a hermit and recluse and hardly ever go out. Most of my social interaction is online, except when I teach workshops, that is. I have a huge blog, a website, belong to tons of art groups online, am on FaceBook, use Twitter and several other social networking sites, and sell my paintings online. The internet has changed all of us! I wouldn’t be able to live without it!

Do you have any advice for artists just starting out?

Do something artistic every day. Try to paint and sketch every day too. Go out into nature and study everything you see. Study everything you can get your hands on about composition and color. Learn to draw accurately. Study other artists’ work every day. Start a blog with your real name (that’s a pet peeve with me! How do you think you will ever be known if you don’t use your real name?) and blog all the time about your paintings, your thoughts about the painting process, and about other artists. Join a local art group, join FaceBook, join Wetcanvas.com. Think art, breathe art, live art, and share art, all the time.

Here is a piece that I have been working on the past few days. I'm beginning to get a better feel for these watercolors. This photograph drew me in because of the strong highlights on the flowers. I actually took this photograph along with the tulip photos that I've been painting lately, on the same day at a local park.

This painting was completed on 140lb cold press with Winsor & Newton watercolors and it's available in my Etsy shop.

I'm back to pastel today. This lovely woman on Flickr, Nancy Rose, has given me permission to use her photographs as references for my paintings, and this one called out to me. I was attracted to the bold colors and soft curves of the peppers.

This painting was done on pastelbord with pastel pencils. The colors are more fresh and bold in person, than they appear in the photo.

Well here is another watercolor painting. I'm thoroughly enjoying using my watercolors again and I plan on dedicating more time for them. This painting almost didn't make it.. I was removing it from my gatorboard and accidentally ripped it! Luckily it was a little rip and I was able to trim it a little.

I just uploaded a bunch of paintings and photography to Imagekind. I've been meaning to do it for a long time but just kept forgetting. Imagekind is great because after you've chosen your image you have a bunch of options. You can order just a simple print, have it framed or printed on canvas. I kept the markup low so that everything is affordable. Definitely check it out because there is so much to choose from.
